NENEH ORPHANAGE

The Neneh Orphanage at Moyamba, sponsored by the Fas Project, provides improved living conditions for the children living under its roof. It provides good nutrition and basic education. In 2014, the first Fas Project trip began building a new orphanage for the children.

STABILITY, CARE, AND LOVE

The orphanage does provide care, shelter, and food to the children. However, our greater hope is that these children truly find their home within the orphanage’s walls. Kind and passionate local staff work to give these kids a family.

In 2014, the Fas Project visited the Bagura Chiefdom of Sierra Leone’s Moyamba District for the first time. Thanks to members of Fas Lebbie’s family, the team connected ahead of time with Ngadi Turay, the director of the Neneh orphanage. Turay told the team about the orphanage’s greatest supply needs and arranged for a visit. The children, mostly orphans and a few foster kids, welcomed the team with chanting and singing.

NENEH ORPHANAGE: HISTORY

Neneh Orphanage was founded in 2005 by a woman named Neneh who wanted a home for children orphaned during Sierra Leone’s brutal civil war. After her death, the orphanage declined and nearly collapsed. Ngadi Turay, Neneh’s daughter, intervened in 2009 to keep the orphanage running. The need in the community has not disappeared.

FAS PROJECT + NENEH ORPHANAGE

Neneh Orphanage was referred to the Fas Project because of its immediate needs and because of the good reputation of its leadership. We were happy to partner with the orphanage and delivered aid funded through product purchases and direct donations.

After the Fas Project adopted the orphanage, the Fas Project team set goals to help the children. First, the team wanted to finish constructing and furnishing a building that remained unfinished because of funding problems. The children’s current shelter is an old and inadequate structure that does not protect them well. The Fas Project continues providing clothing, educational supplies, and -- most importantly -- food. When the Fas Project visited in 2014, bringing clothes, tooth brushes, pens, and books, the children were eager to receive all of these things. The team quickly learned that the surrounding community also lacked these basic items; adults in the village wanted those ites as much as the children did. The team organized our resources carefully, making sure we provided for the children first. Afterward, we were able to provide for the entire town. The experience was humbled and the team left grateful for what Fas Project customers and donors allowed us to do.
