BUREH BEACH

The Fas Project sponsors an orphanage at Bureh Beach and provides for some basic needs, such as food and clothing, for orphans in the community. The organization has a close relationship to skating and surfing; it also partners closely with the nearby Bureh Beach Surf Club, which donates portions of sales of rentals, food, and surf lessons. In 2014, The Fas Project made a special visit. Many of the children at the orphanage participated in a special surf clinic.

BACKGROUND

The Fas Project team researched coastal locations before the trip, hoping to find an ideal place to teach surfing to underprivileged children. Finding connections in the eastern, inland districts was much easier because of Fas Lebbie’s family history in the area; however, the team hoped for just the right place on the coast.

Finding connections in the eastern, inland districts was much easier because of Fas Lebbie’s family history in the area; however, the team hoped for just the right place on the coast.

While researching, the team stumbled upon the Bureh Beach Surf Club -- the first and only official surf club in all of Sierra leone. Jabez, the founder, is a Bureh local with a passion for surfing. The team coordinated a special surf clinic for local children in need. When the team arrived, they discovered that Jabez gives local orphans half of the surf club’s profits, enough to pay for 30 orphans’ school fees and after-school meals.

Fas Project provides food and educational needs while introducing healthy
lifestyle activities to underprivileged youth around the world.

The 2014 clinic provided an opportunity to talk to the children, hear their stories, and understand the impact of the surf club’s sponsorship. Most of the 30 children supported by the club have stories like that of Musa, a then-12-year-old boy. His mother passed away when he was still very young. Because work is scarce, Musa’s father pursued a job in the eastern districts where 60% of the country’s entire workforce is employed in low-paying mining jobs. Musa’s father, unable to support Musa, depends on the orphanage to take care of many of Musa’s needs. The Bureh Beach Surf Club sponsors Musa’s school fees and supplies. Many children at the orphanage like Musa develop a passion for surfing, which keeps them healthy, builds their confidence, offers community, and helps them avoid teen delinquency and teen pregnancy (common issues in the region).
